Hooked Mallard, the Hazards of Monofilament Fish Line

Mallard, apparently hooked on some monofilament. This mallard has apparently ingested a fish line, probably with a hook at the other end. It's possible that he went after someone's bait but equally likely that some shiny fishing lure or fake worm remained on the river bottom, tempting this poor Mallard into what will probably be a death sentence, if it is not removed. Ironically, I did not notice the monofilament until I looked at the picture on the computer some days later.

Female Mallard with Duckling, San Diego, California. I can't help thinking that Momma duck has a look of pride on her face as her duckling follows her across the pond. There were about 12 more siblings in front of Mom who were "cropped" out. Flowers and baby animals everywhere! Don't you love Spring?

Mrs. Mallard, Lake Miramar. Don't you hate it when they beg? Aw, but she's so cute... How could you refuse a look like that?

Cosmopolitan Duck

Cosmopolitan Duck, Lake Miramar. Probably a mix of Mallard and Peking Duck, both of which are bountiful at Lake Miramar. So, if ducks can get along so fabulously, why shouldn't people?

Begging Duck

I dare say ducks are not above begging for a free handout. This one was no exception, as you can see by the hopeful look on his face.

Mr. & Mrs. Mallard

Rumor is ducks pair for life. At least in Korea, they say that. They give newly wed couples a pair of carved wood ducks as a symbol of a lasting relationship. These two ducks, however, were part of a huge flock that were out lounging on the pond in what has turned into some cold, windy and rainy San Diego weather.
