In San Diego for the Winter: Surf Scoters!

Surf Scoters, Melanitta perspicillata, swimming towards me. With wild ducks, it is sometimes tough to get them to swim in towards you, most wild ducks being a little skittish. However, if you sit still and wait for while near where they were formerly hanging out, they will often come back closer to shore.

Surf Scoters are also known as skunk ducks because of their black and white coloration. These medium sized sea ducks spend Summers up in Alaska and Northern Canada but fly South to the Southern U.S. and parts of Baja California during the Winter. There is a large flock that Winters in San Diego Bay and in surrounding areas.

Last Final for the Semester Tonight

Art along San Diego Bay. Odd thing that. It's colorful, playful, full of motion and generally fun. However, there's a part of me that has a little trouble getting over it being made of old tire rims. Of course, it's not in my back yard so I suppose it really doesn't matter one way or the other.

Sailing on San Diego Bay

Sailboat on San Diego Bay. For you cold weather folks, doesn't that make you want to come and visit? Spend a little money and help get the economy going! Visit San Diego. It's been warm and sunny and there are lots of migratory birds that you'd have to go to Alaska to see otherwise. Besides, you'd have to wait until June to see them in Alaska! Hahah. San Diego, vacation capital of California.

Harbor Lights

There's a big beacon light across the San Diego Bay as you look out from Harbor Island. Like a lighthouse, the beacon sweeps round and round in inexorable rhythm, never slowing, never ceasing, not a sound to be heard; there is just the sweep of the cool bluish-white beam as it reflects silently across the water. In the light fog it looks lonely and sad, almost beckoning.

For the Hal-i-but

It was a gorgeous, sunny 90F today. Light breezes and generally toasty all around. We went for a walk along the bay and saw this man with a halibut which I thought was pretty cool so here he is. It was just a hair small so he ended up tossing it back in.

Two-Master

They frequently have notable sailing ships in San Diego Bay including the Star and Stripes which we saw on a recent sailing trip. This ship, an unidentified two-master was just leaving the dock on a windy, overcast day.

San Diego Harbor

One of our friends is buying a condo in downtown San Diego overlooking San Diego Bay. Wow, what a view from the patio! The cruise ship had just come in and you can still see the tug boat along side it. To the right, you can see the four master, Star of India, parked next to a submarine. I'm guessing they have tours of the submarine, perhaps selling tickets at the same place that sells them for the Star of India. The inside of the apartment is really pretty as well including a double wide refrigerator and a nice gas stove with wok fixture included as well as a little fireplace. Not too shabby.
