The Ducks are Back!

American Wigeon, Anas americana and two American Coots, Fulica americana. The wigeons Summer up in Alaska and Canada but come down for the Winter. They've been here since the beginning of December. The coots are here pretty much all year round.

Something Only a Mother Could Love (American Coot Chick)

American Coot, Fulica americana. Admittedly, they look nothing like their white beaked, solid black parents. I suppose they're kind of cute in a bald, frizzy sort of way. Certainly, nothing on the level of duckling cuteness. The parents are hyper aggressive in chasing away the other birds from the nest. I almost thought one of the parent coots might hop out and give me a nip but, at the last minute, it swam on by, apparently deciding against leaving the water to chase the tourists.

Territorial American Coot or Got the Cooties?

Have you ever had one of those grouchy days when you just wish everyone would leave you alone? This American Coot, Fulica americana, is certainly having one! I spotted a female with eggs in a nearby papyrus clump and the male may have been acting territorial around the nest. Whatver the case, he was chasing all comers!

I've been seeing migratory birds in Mission bay as I drove past on the way to school every day. I finally couldn't resist it any longer and stopped to take a peek and take a picture or two. Unfortunately, my trusty Nikon was at home so that left the not quite as fleet footed but much more portable pocket Cannon. I figured I'd try a video. So, tonight, I bring you the American Coot! A.k.a. cooties and mud. It looked like they were pulling up bog plants and perhaps worms and invertebrates. You decide.
