Cape Sundew, Drosera capensis, in Bloom in the Back Yard

Cape Sundew, Drosera capensis, blooming on the back porch.  The flowers are borne high up above the sticky, deadly, carnivorous leaves, likely so the pollinators don't end up as lunch.  I have a pot of these two types of Drosera capensis, one red dewed and one clear dewed, mixed in with Drosera spathulata and bladderworts.  I fill up a plastic tray with RO water once a week that I set the pot into.  The little gnats that they eat do the rest.

Death by Nectar or Sticky Way to Go

Drosera capensis with beetle. I felt the last picture just didn't do Drosera capensis justice so I got a close shot of a leave with a beetle. You can see the tendrils holding it up against the leaf. Fascinating in an odd, "nature does what nature needs" sort of way. This one is in full sun on the back porch and, so far, appears to be happy.

Sticky Fun

Drosera capensis (Sundew). Those sticky drops attract insects that are captured and digested by the sundew to obtain much needed Nitrogen to supplement the nitrogen-poor peat that they live in. This particular sundew is native to the Cape in South Africa.

Well, I'm all fired out. Enough gloom and stats for a lifetime. Here's a picture of Drosera capensis, a carnivorous sundew plant. They are really quite pretty, with their little deadly drops of red dew sparkling in the sun. The little gnats they catch probably think about the same, at least until they get stuck.
